This is a very rare coffee maker from the Golden Age of Milan espresso machines- 1950-1965-the streamlined form would look perfect in any mid-century modern kitchen.
The quality of the manufacture is very high as you would expect from Milan in the 1950's. The design of this coffee machine is extremely simple, elegant and effective. It features an open boiler which surrounds the piston and goes inside the neck of the machine where the heating element is located.
When the lever is raised a strong spring is compressed and the piston chamber fills with hot water from the boiler. When the lever is released the water is forced through the coffee at high pressure. The result is fantastic espresso with rich crema- time after time. The portafilter is 45mm and comes with a small and large basket- I would say the large one holds around 14 grams of coffee. This open boiler design ensures the water temperature is ideal for good espresso.
The machine of offer here is a very complete one: it comes with both filter baskets, drip tray set, tamper spoon and knock box.
Cosmetically the machine shows its age and some signs of use. There are some chips on the enameled paintwork and other small marks here and there. The bakelite handle on the lever has a chipped area near the base which has been repaired with glue. There are some chips on the paintwork where the chrome boiler lid sits. But as you can see in the photographs it is in great overall condition.
Functionally it has been fully cleaned and prepared for use. The piston seals were in good order so they were cleaned and lubricated. The boiler was de-scaled and is very clean. The machine was tested and is working well. The shot pictured here was not the best I managed- with practice I feel this machine will produce really outstanding espresso.
