Here is another fine vintage atomic coffee machine from the private Ikon Exports collection. This machine is an Italian made Atomic imported into Australia by Bon Trading. By our guess it dates from the early 1970's when Bon Trading apparently sold a limited number of machines labelled "Bou Trading" instead of "Bon Trading" for some unknown reason. Some say "Bon" was formally "Bou". Others put it down to dyslexia and a typo... Today these genuine "Bou" labeled Atomic's are very rare.

This coffee machine is not to be confused with the recent so called "Bou Trading" Indian made atomic's. A quantity of machines appeared on the market over the last 5 years that are made in India and have a label copied from this original one. These atomic machines also state that they are made in Italy and associated with Bon Trading. They are neither. They are of very poor quality and easy to differentiate from this original authentic Italian atomic. The square boiler plug hole on the body- and the vertical seams on the bakelite parts mark this out as an original, 100% Guaranteed.

As you can see in the images the polished alloy on this machine is in quite good shiny condition. Overall we rate it as 'very good used condition'. The machine is tested and working well. It does show signs of its age and signs of use- there are some scratches and marks on the body and some big scratches on the jug. The steam arm assembly is in good order: it shows signs of use with the steam nozzle chrome polished away to reveal the brass underneath. The seals are checked and in fine order: we made some excellent coffee with this machine- the milk frothed very well (see images).

The "Bou Trading" label shows its age: some paint is flaking off. We decided not to clean this to preserve the label as much as possible.

This Atomic has one notable repair which is not original: the screws that hold the filter plate in place in the head have broken off. This was due to rust- some atomics were wrongly fitted with steel screws and this was the result after 30+ years. Generally the atomic machines had brass screws that avoided this problem, however this "Bou" machine was not so lucky. Not to worry; The filter plate has been replaced with a new "La Sorrentina" TM star patter replacement filter plate- this part has had two stainless rivets put through the screw holes to blank them out. The new food silicon seal holds the filter plate in place- in actual use there is really no need for the original screws. This set up actually makes cleaning the head simpler, and is just how the seals and filter plates are held in place in most Italian Moka pots (The new owner could have the screws in the head drilled out, but it is a tricky spot to get to).

This Atomic has been cleaned and prepared for use. It comes with a brand new food grade silicon seal in the head and a new "La Sorrentina" TM brand Bakelite water/safety valve knob. The steam washers have been checked and lightly oiled, they are in perfect condition, there are no leaks. There are 3 different coffee baskets included: the two vintage alloy star pattern filters (these are 100% Italian ones and slightly different than La Sorrentina baskets- both baskets are a bit worn) and one brand new large stainless steel basket (with smaller holes which are better than the traditional baskets and highly recommended for Atomics).

The original Italian made safety knob is included for the collector- you are getting an original machine- with most of it's original parts (see image below). A set of the new "La Sorrentina" atomic coffee maker instructions (much improved on the Bon manual), a "La Sorrentina" brand spare bakelite steam ball, and a spare head seal are included.

Rare vintage "Bou" Atomic Coffee Machine package. Suitable for the serious collector of Mid Century Modernism- or the lover of fine coffee. Ready to go.

Ikon Export's offers a 100% Guarantee: this machine is an original, and is made in Italy, circa 1975. Design registered and patented by Giordano Robbiati of Milan, 1947.

Many vintage Atomics have problems from age, hard use and especially poor storage: They need repairs and cleaning before they can make perfect coffee. This Atomic shows only moderate signs of use, it has been checked, and is ready to make coffee the moment you receive it in the mail.

Patented by Giordano Robbiati of Milan around 1947 this is an absolute modernist 'organic' design classic: and it also makes very good coffee! It is built to such a high standard that it will work for years and years with just a little maintenance every now and then- Atomic's are virtually unbreakable. They can be used on gas and electric stoves and are the ULTIMATE camping/caravaning espresso solution. The milk frother is very powerful and whips up frothy cappuccino in seconds. The Atomic on offer here is in very fine, complete condition - and is working 100% perfectly.
